18 Things I've Learned

Friday, October 3, 2014
Today I turn a year older. Today I turn eighteen. Though it may be too presumptuous of me to proudly say that I've survived eighteen years, which for some people seems only like the time it takes for the bus to arrive, I still think it's a great accomplishment. I mean, eighteen years. Eighteen years filled with joy and pain... It would be a lie to say that these eighteen years passed by like a breeze. But I'm glad that I got through them. So today, as I turn eighteen, I'd like to share with you eighteen things that I've learned.
  1. Feeling bad for yourself won't do anything - I went through a phase where I kept asking myself questions like, "Why me?" "Why do I have to deal with this?" Well, it didn't do me any good. Feeling bad won't fix anything. It'll most likely worsen the situation.
  2. Smiling helps - It's just a shitty day, not a shitty life. Just face this messed up world with a smile plastered on your face.
  3. Don't give a shit about what people think - Really, why should it bother you? If you keep thinking about what they might be thinking, you'll end up being stuck. They're probably not even thinking about what you're thinking, anyway.
  4. Do give a shit about what people think - Because sometimes these people know best.
  5. Don't stress over the simplest things - Girl, take a chill pill. If it's a small thing, it's bound to have a solution.
  6. Don't be afraid of making a fool out of yourself sometimes - I have always tried to avoid situations wherein the possibility of me making a fool out of myself was high. But you know what? If you're worried they're going to judge you... just stop. They're probably going to forget about what happened in ten seconds.
  7. You should learn how to breathe - I get it, you want success. We all do. But by rushing toward success, the good things are left behind. Breathe. Enjoy the ride.
  8. Wanting something does not make you selfish - It depends on what you want, though. If you want world domination, then maaaaybe you should reconsider your career path.
  9. Surround yourself with people who genuinely make you happy - Everybody needs friends. They know you inside-out, and they're probably going to be the ones left standing in the end. So spend your time with the right people.
  10. Distance yourself from people who make you doubt yourself - Got any bullies? Haters? Give them a big ol' z-snap and walk away. You don't need their opinion.
  11. Get used to disappointment - You can't always be right. If things go wrong, just relax. It doesn't mean that you're the failure here. Lots of things could have made it go wrong. It's not your fault.
  12. You can't always have perfection - No matter how hard you try, you can't have perfection. And that's okay. No one ever gets perfection.
  13. Go with the flow - Swimming against the current could hurt you.
  14. Hold on to your dreams, no matter how silly they may sound to others - You dreams are never silly, okay? Keep that in mind. If you want something, go ahead. Go for it. Don't let anyone ever tell you that you're out of your mind.
  15. You need to stand up for what you believe in - Why should you be afraid to speak up? If you know you're standing up for the right thing, then you tell 'em.
  16. Don't be afraid to be honest about yourself - Accept that you're flawed and that it's alright to be flawed. Realize that you have weaknesses and try to be better.
  17. Indulge in making happy memories - Memories will be there forever. Fall in love with memories. Travel. Laugh. Be happy.
  18. Be open to change - You're not the best version of yourself -- ever. The world changes and so must you. Nothing stays the same, and being open to change helps greatly.
