19 Things I Wish I Knew

Sunday, October 4, 2015
So... I turned nineteen. On the big day, I woke up at six A.M. after going to bed at midnight (I wasn't waiting for my birthday, honestly, I was catching up on Big Bang Theory), blew my candles, opened my presents, and that was it. They say that when you don't get excited for your birthday, that's when you know you've grown up... and I think they're right, whoever 'they' are.

Anyway, as an obligatory post, I've decided to write a list of nineteen (because duh) things that I wish I knew before I turned nineteen. I mean, it's not like I only knew this things on the day of my birthday, but you get the point.

  1. You don't have to think about what people think about you.
  2. You should not have to spend your energy on people who won't do the same for you.
  3. Taking care of yourself, physically and emotionally, does not make you selfish.
  4. Grades are shit. Focus on the things you actually care about.
  5. People who don't appreciate you should not be listened to.
  6. It's okay to let these people walk away/kick them out.
  7. Sometimes, the most unexpected people can become your greatest friends.
  8. And sometimes, the people you think are perfect will be the ones to leave first.
  9. Being career-driven is okay. There are no rules on being a woman.
  10. Feminism is one of the most important things a girl should understand.
  11. There is more to life than getting a job.
  12. Often, you just need to suck it up, deal with it, but you don't have to be happy about it.
  13. You shouldn't surround yourself with people who don't genuinely make you happy/make you a better person.
  14. You can (you should) stand up for yourself.
  15. People who've offended you years before probably won't matter years from now.
  16. You are not a bitch. You are the #Girlboss (or #Boyboss).
  17. Don't allow people to gain from your efforts.
  18. Don't be afraid to take your achievements for yourself, but learn to acknowledge others.
  19. Don't waste your time on something that you don't love.
Mushy enough for you?

Those are the nineteen things that top my list of things that I wish I knew. There are actually hundreds of them, if put into detail, but these are the most relevant ones for me. Nineteen does not feel so different, to be honest. It just feels like I'm getting closer to the most dreaded age -- twenty. I don't want to be an adult!

  1. Ahhh I love this so much! Happy birthday! I just turned 19 too (last month) and I totally agree with these things. Just college itself has taught me a lot about life and the kind of person I want to be. I mean, this is the time when we start making a life for ourselves after all. I like the bit about how there are no rules on being a woman. I like all of this post! Thanks for sharing!!

    1. Thank you, Alicia! I think college has been the most enlightening time. I love how I feel like I finally have a sense of direction! Haha! x
