Do Clothes Define a Woman?

Sunday, February 7, 2016
A few days ago, I saw a post circulating around Facebook. This post had a Tumblr-ish picture of a girl wearing Nike sneakers and slinging a backpack around her shoulders. It compared the casual girl to the feminine girl, claiming that casual girls were better than the latter. To be honest, I'm tired of seeing posts that hail women who prefer to wear sneakers than heels, jeans than dresses, and backpacks than purses. To be honest, I don't feel that there should be any comparison between these two types of women at all.

Some believe that the casual girl is a better woman. She decides to add edge to herself by going against stereotypes. She can be called as "one of the boys", always lazily chilling yet still managing to look chic. She prides herself in overeating pizza and never crossing her legs when she sits down. She has proclaimed herself as the "better" woman because she never sticks to other people's definition of a woman.

However, there's still the feminine woman. She likes floral prints and fresh scents of perfume. The feminine woman wears heels and handbags, and she likes to keep her appearance neat, as if she just walked out of an ironing board. She walks with grace and has an air of confidence in her step, and people can never see her stuffing her face with pizza.

Now, before you say that I'm mocking these women, let me tell you this: both of those descriptions may or may not be true. My point is that no one can truly define a person by mere observation. Having a chilled out vibe is not better than being prim and proper. Wearing skirts does not make you better than those who wear jeans.

No type of woman is better than the other because all types of femininity are great. Different things empower different women, and if others are comfortable if they embrace a certain stereotype, then good for them. But if others choose to go beyond that description, then good for them, too. Clothes are just clothes, and they cannot add nor take away your femininity.

The world is full of girls. Girls who like different things, girls who believe in different things, and girls who wear different things. Girls do not have to be something specific, and girls do not have to tell other girls what to do, how to act, or what to wear.

All girls are great in their own ways, and what a person chooses to wear cannot define who she is. There's nothing wrong with wanting to look "feminine" or "girly". In the same way, nothing is wrong with looking casual. I wish girls would just allow other girls to be themselves, and not impose this idea of "rebellion against the stereotype of being feminine".

Wear what makes you feel good.
