Finding your Instagram identity without faking it

There are two types of people on Instagram: the ones who just use the app to post about their life, and the ones who take Instagram seriously by creating quality content and making sure their Instagram doesn't end up looking like a photo album. If you belong to the latter, or if you want to be part of that group, then you're in the right place.

If you're really serious about Instagram, you can't just be posting random pictures. You need to create your Instagram identity, maintain it, and make it stand out.

"Make your identity? You mean, create a fake version of yourself?" No. Not quite. We all live for authenticity, so it's absolutely necessary to stay true to yourself. However, you want to select which parts of yourself to show to the digital world.

Here's how you can find and create your Instagram identity without faking it:

List your interests

What ignites a fire in your heart? Do you like art, music, or fashion? Above all things, your Instagram identity should be authentic. Trust me, people will know if you're just faking it just to get double-taps.You don't have to stick to one thing; that can be very challenging. You can be multiple things, like an account for crafts and parenting, or an account for sports and health.

List down words that best describe you

Some people are memorable because they have certain traits and qualities that stand out. If you want your Instagram to be easily recognized and remembered, think of a couple of words that describe you as a person, as well as your style. In my case, my words are classy, feminine and sassy. I make sure my photos radiate class, I style them in a feminine way using props and colors that one would associate with femininity, and I stay true to my personality through my often witty/sassy captions.

You want people to think of these words when they follow you on Instagram. Make it easy for them. Don't make them have to figure out who and what you are.

Think about your feed's colors

Maintaining a feed/grid that follows a color scheme is harder than you think. This part takes a LOT of commitment if you want a feed/grid that looks good. Some people have very colorful Instagram grids, but note that your chosen color SHOULD reflect the tone of your photos in general. If people see a vibrant grid, they'll think you're fun, playful and outgoing. If people see that your photos all use a black and white filter, they'll think you're mysterious and possibly artistic.

Your color scheme reflects your personality. Go for something you can actually maintain and have fun with.

Don't do it just for the 'gram

You won't have as much fun if you're just doing it for the sake of one Instagram photo. When creating your Instagram identity, don't look at other Instagram accounts and say, "Wow, I want to be like that" because you'll end up doing things, buying things, and being things without being fully interested in them at all. If you want to 'gram all about coffee, make sure that you actually like coffee. If you envy accounts about travel, ask yourself first... can you even travel, and do you even like traveling? If so, to what extent? Keep in mind you'll need to create content CONSTANTLY, so be sure it's something you can do on a regular basis.

Remember, just because you envy someone's Instagram, doesn't mean you have to copy them. You might like looking at travel pictures, but do you even have the energy AND passion to maintain a travel gram?
