How to Deal with a Job That Doesn't Spark Joy

I think all of us have to experience jobs that we hate  don't like. Whether it's because of financial reasons, proximity, obligation or lack of other career options, I'm pretty sure most of us have had jobs that we hate. Still, the thought of having to endure an eight-hour, five-days-a-week job that you don't find enjoyable at all is pretty daunting.

Here are some ways I've dealt with jobs that don't spark me any joy.

Find a support group

You're not alone. There are people at your office who would rather be doing something else, too. It's nice to vent to these people, but be careful -- you never know who's going to stab you in the back. If you're worried they might rat you out, you could vent to your friends who are working somewhere else. Just find a group of people you can talk to at the end about the day. Narrate to them your day's frustrations so you can feel a bit better.

Fuel your passions outside of work

One of the reasons why we have trouble loving our jobs is that our passions lie somewhere else. We know we're meant to be doing other things. Going to work makes us feel drained and unmotivated because we know that in this career we're stuck in, we will never find fulfillment. That's why it's so important to work on things that actually interest you on the side. These can be hobbies, activities, or businesses that spark a fire inside your heart.

Have lunch outside the office

Some people eat their lunch at their desks, but honestly, who wants to have lunch staring at a computer, surrounded by paper clips, folders and sticky notes? Your lunch break is supposed to be your time. Do you really want to spend it in an environment that doesn't make you happy? Find a friend and have lunch somewhere else, whether it's at the restaurant nearby, your company's lunch room, or at a common area. This breath of fresh air, even if it's just an hour, will make a difference in your day.

Slay your office attire

If you can't love your work, at least love the clothes you wear to work. I'm a firm believer that if you look good, you'll feel good, so buy that pink blazer, nude trousers and those red bottom heels, honey!

Say bye-bye

If all else fails, it might be time to say goodbye for good. Staying at a job that doesn't motivate or inspire you can make you feel down and depressed. If you really feel like you can't grin and bear it anymore, there are lots of jobs out there just waiting for you. In time, we'll all find our dream jobs, and our "bad" jobs will just be fun stories to tell our friends.
