Why I decided to be a Barbie collector

Not a lot of people know this, but when I was a kid, I was extremely shy. When people would come up to me, all I wanted to do was shrink. In school, I couldn't even talk to my classmates. I've felt embarrassed several times in the classroom (by my own teachers) for being that way. I suffered from extreme shyness and people felt frustrated at me for that -- and I knew it wasn't normal, but I just couldn't bring myself to speak. Not even a single word.

Shyness led to loneliness. My childhood didn't involve playing outside with friends. It didn't involve staying in school for a few more hours after the bell rung so I could play with my classmates. My escape? My dolls.

What made up most of my childhood were my Barbies. I would spend hours each day playing with my dolls, coming up with stories for each of them, making sure Barbie ended up with Ken. I was "God" in my own little imaginary kingdom. I think having those Barbies was what kept me sane. I'd rush home to play with my dolls, and that would be the only time that day where I'd "play" with others. My doll house was my safe space.

I had around 50+ Barbies, but eventually, I grew up and sold almost all of them.

But this year, after watching a documentary on Barbie, my interest has been sparked again. There's probably a deeper, psychological explanation for it, but I'll leave that to the experts.

So, a few months ago, I decided that I would collect Barbies again. But this time, I'll be leveling up -- I'll be collecting signature Barbie dolls.

Why am I collecting them?

1. I've always been fascinated by collectors. I love watching shows about people who collect weird things, from stamps from every corner of the world to stones that look like faces.

2. It feels exclusive. There's just something about owning a Barbie that's only one in five thousand. Some people collect rare handbags. I collect rare Barbies.

3. I like pretty things. I'm the kind of person who will buy something if it looks pretty. Doesn't even matter if I'll never use it. Collector Barbies aren't just dolls -- they're works of art. The work and detail that goes into them is incredible. In a way, it's like I'm investing in art for my home.

4. I can sell them for more than triple the price. Gold and Platinum Label Barbies can reach insanely high values after just a few years. Collectible Barbies can be sold even higher if they've never been taken out of the box. The Barbie collector community is small, but there are people within it who would be willing to pay those prices just to get their hands on some dolls.

5. I'm a firm believer in spoiling yourself with one luxury. It's what drives you to work harder. Find something that'll motivate you, whether that's a luxury handbag or a sports car. When you finally buy those things, you'll value them more because you really worked hard for them.

So far, I've collected 6 collectible Barbies. My current favorite is the Barbie Mythical Muse Mermaid Enchantress Doll. It's the most beautiful Barbie I've ever laid my eyes on. Just take a look at her:

I'm going to be adding more Barbies to my collection this year. If you want to follow me on my journey as an adult collector, come along! I'd be thrilled to share it with you! :-)
